British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix provided an update Thursday on the province’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic. British Columbians are being urged to stay close to home over the Victoria Day long weekend, as the province recorded another three deaths and 15 new cases of COVID-19. Dr. Henry made the plea at her Thursday briefing as she said nearly 79 per cent of B.C.’s 2,392 test-positive cases have now completely recovered. “This weekend less travel is incredibly important, we’re asking that of everyone,” said Henry. B.C. Premier John Horgan announced Wednesday the renewal of a provincial state of emergency as the province continues its efforts to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus. Horgan said the state of emergency would remain in place “for the foreseeable future.” The B.C. government also announced it would use a funding windfall of $120 million from the federal government to “decommission, reclaim or restore” more than 2,000 inactive or orphaned wells within British Columbia. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an investment of $1.7 billion to clean up orphan wells in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan in April to help keep people working during the COVID-19 pandemic. Energy Minister Bruce Ralston said $100 million would be used to clean up dormant wells in B.C., while $15 million would go towards cleaning up orphaned wells, where the operator “no longer exists,” cannot be located or is insolvent. The remaining $5 million will be used to mitigate the environmental impacts of “legacy” oil and gas discovery. British Columbia provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 95 new cases of COVID-19 in the province on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in B.C. to 1,948. Henry said that 40 of the new 95 cases reported in B.C. are at or related to the Mission Federal Correctional facility, bringing the total number of inmates testing positive to 10 in addition to 12 staff members. The doctor also reported two new COVID-19 deaths on Saturday, bringing the total number of deaths in the province to 100. One of the new deaths reported Saturday is the first death in the province’s Indigenous community: a woman in the ‘Namgis First Nation in Alert Bay, a small community on Comorant Island where a cluster of cases has been confirmed. The blowback for the real-life prosecutors of Ava Duvernay’s Netflix mini-series “When They See Us” continues.Elizabeth Lederer, lead prosecutor in the Central Park Five case, has resigned from her part-time lecturer post at Columbia Law School after a petition calling for her firing garnered over 10,000 signatures. In a letter published Wednesday, Columbia Law School dean Gillian Lester said that the miniseries “reignited a painful — and vital — national conversation about race, identity, and criminal justice.”Lederer said in a statement, “Given the nature of the recent publicity generated by the Netflix portrayal of the Central Park case, it is best for me not to renew my teaching application.”In 1989, Lederer prosecuted Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise — known as the Central Park Five — in the assault and rape of a white female investment banker in Central Park. They were exonerated in 2002 after Matias Reyes confessed to the crimes, which was corroborated by DNA evidence. The petition to fire Lederer was written by the Black Law Students Association at Columbia Law.”[T]hat is just a start,” they said in the petition. “The School must do more because letting one professor go does not improve the lives of Black and Latinx law students, nor does it improve the learning experience of students of color at Columbia Law School.”The resignation comes a week after Linda Fairstein, who helmed the Manhattan District Attorney’s sex crimes unit, published a rebuke of “When They See Us” in the Wall Street Journal. She endured a series
