REDLANDS (CBSLA) – Investigators are trying to determined what caused a three-alarm blaze which tore through an Amazon Distribution Center in Redlands early Friday morning while employees were working inside. Fortunately, no one was hurt. June 5, 2020. (CBSLA)The blaze was reported at 5:30 a.m. at 2255 West Lugonia Ave., in the area of the 10 Freeway and Mountain View Avenue. Video from the scene showed huge flames and plumes of black smoke shooting hundreds of feet into the air. There were several Amazon big rigs parked outside which also caught fire.“All I could hear is my supervisors yelling, ‘fire,’ and ‘get out of the building as fast as you can,’” employee Aquila Canteen told CBSLA. “And I could see people scattering.”There were about 40 employees inside when the fire broke out.“Within 15 minutes the whole back of the building collapsed and exploded,” Canteen said. In a statement to CBSLA, Amazon said the warehouse is operated by a third-party company called Kuehne and Nagel which specifically helps Amazon ship very large items.“We are glad everyone is safe, and thankful for the efforts of the local firefighters and first responders,” Amazon wrote. “This site was operated by a third party and we will support them throughout this process.”June 5, 2020. Daegu’s usually bustling downtown streets were nearly deserted on Friday as people wearing face masks lined up at clinics seeking testing for the new coronavirus, as South Korea’s government declared a health emergency in the city. Schools were shuttered, churches told worshipers to stay away and some mass gatherings were banned as cases of the new virus swelled. Daegu, a southeastern city of 2.5 million that is the country’s fourth-largest, emerged as the focus of government efforts to contain the disease known as COVID-19. The first case in Daegu was reported on Tuesday. By Friday, the area had 153. The biggest cluster of cases has been linked to the Daegu branch of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, where two recent services were attended by a COVID-19 carrier. The church said in a statement that health officials were disinfecting that branch, which has about 8,000 followers. Shincheonji, which claims to have 200,000 followers in South Korea, said it had closed all of its 74 sanctuaries around the nation and instead told followers to watch its services on YouTube. Shincheonji, which translates as “New heaven and new Earth,” is a controversial new religious movement established in 1984 by Lee Man-hee. President Donald Trump is getting what he wants for the nation’s birthday: a celebration featuring fireworks, fighter jets and tanks that makes him the center of attention. Trump will speak from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial Thursday evening, remaking the capital’s July 4th festivities into a display of military might mixed with presidential politics.
