U.K. Environment Secretary George Eustice and Stephen Powis, national medical director for NHS England provided an update on the COVID-19 battle in the U.K. on April 26. Eustice said that the country now had a total of 152,840 COVID-19 cases and that 20,732 people had died in total. He said there were more than 669,000 tests that had been carried out. Eustice said in terms of reducing social distancing measures, the government must be confident they’ve met the five benchmarks laid out last week by First Secretary Dominic Raab. Eustice also said that food supply businesses, like grocery stores, had reported a lower absence rate compared to three weeks ago when it hit 20 per cent, saying some have seen their rate drop as low as six per cent as of the end of last week allowing for more people to be available to provide service. He said supermarkets have also increased and prioritized delivery slots for vulnerable people. He added the government is working to ensure those who don’t belong to that group but are in need of help, such as people with disabilities or people unable to draw on family for assistance, can get a volunteer shopper to help. New Brunswick health officials provided an update on Friday regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in the province as well as an announcement on relaxing measures in combating the outbreak. Over the next several weeks and months, New Brunswick will be gradually lifting COVID-19 restrictions, while complying with public health policies and advice, announced Premier Blaine Higgs. The four-step plan to ease measures will only progress if conditions under each level are met. The province’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell said that if another spike of cases occurs, she won’t hesitate to reinstate restrictions again. Additionally, the province will enter the “orange phase,” which is the first of four phases for loosening strict COVID-19 measures within the province. Effective immediately, households may choose to spend time with only one other household, said Higgs, as part of this initial phase of reopening the province. Border controls will also be maintained until a vaccine is developed. During the briefing, Russell said that like the day prior, the province had no new cases of COVID-19 to announce, and she encouraged people to continue to wash their hands, not touch their face and to practice social distancing.
