Quebec Premier François Legault reported the lowest number of new cases of COVID-19 since April 11 on Tuesday, with 570 new infections. He also reported 51 new deaths due to COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths in the province to 3,647. The total number of COVID-19 cases in Quebec stands at 44,197 as of Tuesday. Quebec nurses held a demonstration outside of Legault’s office in Quebec City on Tuesday to draw attention to difficult working conditions during the pandemic. Legault said during Tuesday’s briefing that he was disappointed by the demonstration and he wants to meet with union representatives. He added that one of the fixes is to hire more workers, something he said his government has tried to do but positions are not being filled. Legault welcomed the recent agreement to extend the closure of the Canada-U.S. border for non-essential travel, saying it’s one of the requests he made when meeting with the prime minister in the past weeks. He added he wants to see the agreement extended for another month into the summer to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “I’m happy that we have another month,” Legault said. “I would like that we go another month after in July until we really have control.” For more info, please go to https://globalnews.ca/news/6958223/quebec-coronavirus-may-19/ Subscribe to Global News Channel HERE: http://bit.ly/20fcXDc Like Global News on Facebook HERE: http://bit.ly/255GMJQ Follow Global News on Twitter HERE: http://bit.ly/1Toz8mt Follow Global News on Instagram HERE: https://bit.ly/2QZaZIB #GlobalNews #health #COVID19 #coronavirus
As some states push to reopen, some parts of the pre-coronavirus lifestyle have returned to normal this weekend. However, there are instances where fewer restrictions came with a surge in virus illnesses. Jamie Yuccas reports.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Saturday that as parts of the state have started reopening, “you’re going to see an increase in the numbers, but you don’t want to see a spike.” Watch his remarks.
British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry provided an update on Saturday regarding the province’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Henry reported 21 new cases of the virus, bringing the total number to 2,428. She also announced one new death, bringing the total number of lives lost to 141 in the province. Henry also confirmed an outbreak at Abbotsford Regional Hosptial’s intensive care unit, where six staff and two patients contracted COVID-19. The province’s top doctor asked residents to “pause” during the May long weekend, stay close to home and “think through” how to put in place their own plan for safe social interactions in the coming weeks. Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams and associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe provided an update on COVID-19 on Friday. Dr. Yaffe reported a total of 21,922 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, an increase of 428 cases since Thursday, adding that “due to a data upload issue, 87 cases were missed on Thursday’s report, but now included in Friday’s report.” The actual number of cases on Thursday was 345, instead of the 258 that was previously reported. The actual new number of cases reported on Friday is 341, plus the 87 missed numbers to a total of 428. Dr. Barbara also reported an additional 27 deaths due to COVID-19 in Ontario, bringing the total number of deaths in the province to 1,825. She also said that public health has “almost competed” the universal testing and surveillance for long-term care home residents and staff, which will open up more capacity to test more people at assessment centers across Ontario. Manitoba’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Brent Roussin and Lanette Siragusa of Manitoba Shared Health provided an update on the province’s COVID-19 crisis and response on Friday. Roussin announced that there were no new cases of coronavirus in the province, for the third day in a row. Manitoba’s cases continue to stand at 289, with 28 active cases. Roussin said there were three individuals in hospital, with one in intensive care. Asked about how people should congregate during the long weekend, Roussin acknowledged there’s confusion. He said the more people you spend time with, the more you increase your risk — so people should still be cautious while enjoying an afternoon on a patio. On Thursday, Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister said that additional enforcement is coming to public health orders in the province. New legislation has now been adopted and enacted under the Public Health Act which gives more powers to some officials allowing them to ticket people who are failing to comply with the orders. There may be light at the end of the tunnel today for London as new modelling suggests the capital’s coronavirus outbreak is slowing dramatically. The research by Public Health England and Cambridge University suggests the reproduction rate of the virus, the ‘r’ is now at 0.4 in the capital. Meaning for every ten people who catch coronavirus, it will be passed on to just four others. The research estimates that new daily infections in the capital are now at just 24 Before the lockdown, London’s r rate was around 2.8, with 213,000 people being infected a day by March 23rd, when the lockdown was imposed. The modelling suggests that London’s infection rate is halving every 3.5 days in an encouraging boost for Britain’s biggest city and economic powerhouse. After London, the South West has the second lowest rate of infection with 739 daily recorded cases. In different parts of the country, however, the picture painted is much bleaker. British Columbia has reported one new death from COVID-19 and 16 new cases of the virus. Henry said more than 78 per cent of B.C.’s 2,376 COVID-19 cases had fully recovered. The province’s death toll from the pandemic now stands at 132. The number of people in hospital had fallen by four to 59 patients, she said. Just 14 of those remain in intensive care. Henry said there were no new community outbreaks of the virus, but that the number of people living or working in long-term care who have tested positive has climbed to 489. New Brunswick’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell and Premier Blaine Higgs held a COVID-19 briefing on Wednesday to provide an update on the province’s ongoing response. During the briefing, Russell said that there were still no new cases for a seventh day straight, a week after the province reported its last new case. Of the 120 cases in the province, two remain active. Russell also said she was happy to see people wearing a mask in public, but cautioned that it should not be used as a replacement for physical distancing. She advised that as the province continues to slowly reopen, people should remember to wear face coverings when in places where proper physical distancing may not be possible, but advised not to wear them all the time or an extended period. The premier also spoke about the province’s borders during Wednesday’s briefing and said police remain at the borders to stop unnecessary travel into the province. Alberta reported 45 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and 1 new death, bringing the death toll in the province to 118. The province’s chief medical officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw said during a daily briefing about Alberta’s response to the pandemic that 4,866 people have recovered. There are currently 1,361 active cases. Hinshaw said 73 cases have resulted in hospitalization and 12 people are in intensive care. She also addressed questions about the province’s relaunch strategy, and said a decision about whether the province would push forward with Stage 1 of the relaunch on Thursday would be made during a meeting of the emergency management cabinet committee. A decision on that front would be announced on Wednesday. Hinshaw asked Albertans to “be patient” and said two triggers must be met in order for the province to move forward with the relaunch: first, the hospitalization rate must be stable or must not have increased by more than 5 per cent and second, ICU occupancy must be less than 50 per cent of available beds. British Columbia reported one new death from COVID-19 over the weekend and 23 additional cases, bringing the total to 2,353. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix confirmed the latest numbers on Monday and spoke about efforts to slowly start reopening the economy. Dr. Henry asked for patience as the province moves toward easing physical distancing requirements after the May long weekend, comparing B.C.’s reopening plan to a “steady stream” that is “far more successful than a rushing river that can damage things in its place.” Of the 2,353 cases of COVID-19 in the province, 66 people are in hospital and 18 remain in intensive care, officials said. There have been 1,719 recoveries. Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams provided an update Friday on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and discussed the public health agency’s ongoing response to the pandemic. Ontario reported 477 new cases of the COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, on Friday, bringing the provincial total to 19,598 cases. The death toll has risen to 1,540, as 63 more deaths were reported. Meanwhile, 13,990 people have recovered from COVID-19, which is 71.4 per cent of cases. Williams said it looks as if the province appears to be in a “slow plateau.” The province’s top doctor said case numbers aren’t coming down as quickly as he’d like to see, but it is moving “in the right direction” and noted that Friday’s report had a low positivity rate compared to the number of tests conducted. Friday’s report marked an increase of 2.5 per cent in total cumulative cases. It also marks the highest number of cases in a single-day since the beginning of the week.
