Scotland and Northern Ireland have both reported no new coronavirus deaths as the UK saw its lowest number of fatalities since March. Scotland’s announcement on Sunday marks the first time it has seen no Covid-19 deaths since lockdown began back in March. Northern Ireland has previously seen days with no deaths. Across the UK, a further 77 people have died after contracting coronavirus, bringing the total number of fatalities to 40,542. Crowds of people have been seen in recent weeks at protests, over the Memorial Day holiday and, Redfield noted, at the SpaceX launch Saturday. Huge crowds gathered at Florida’s space coast Wednesday to watch SpaceX’s first attempt at launching astronauts to space. During the hearing, House Democrats grilled Redfield on President Donald Trump’s push for states to reopen after shutting down as part of social distancing measures meant to curb the spread of the virus. Manitoba recorded one new case of COVID-19 on Wednesday as the number of active cases in the province has fallen to below 10, according to health officials. The new reported case brings the total number in Manitoba to 298. Chief medical health officer Dr. Brent Roussin said Wednesday that four of the province’s active cases are linked to a cluster related to temporary foreign workers in the Southern Health region of the province. Manitoba’s chief medical health officer Dr. Brent Roussin and Shared Health’s chief nursing officer Lanette Siragusa shared an update on the most recent numbers of COVID-19 cases in the province and the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Monday. During the briefing, it was announced that there are no new cases of the novel coronavirus to report. Roussin said the province’s count of lab-confirmed positive and probable positive cases remains at 295. The doctor gave more information on two cases reported late last week, which health officials have previously said were related to travel. Roussin now says both cases were truck drivers who had traveled into the United States. He said both truck drivers had self-isolated quickly after noticing symptoms. The province enters Phase 2 of its reopening plan on Monday, which will include expanded capacity at childcare centres, allowing limited access to educational facilities, as well as the reopening of community centres and resumption of team sports and recreational activities like theatre and dance. Mayor John Tory was joined by Toronto’s medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa and Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg as they provided an update on the city’s COVID-19 cases and the ongoing response to the pandemic on Monday. Dr. de Villa reported that the city has 164 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday. She said that 8,630 people have recovered from the virus in the city, which is an increase of 184 people since Sunday.
