Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Wednesday said the number of COVID-19 tests carried out in the province has been “unacceptable” since the beginning of the pandemic. Premier Ford made the comments during a daily briefing on the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside Health Minister Christine Elliott and Labour Minister Monte McNaughton. Ford acknowledged that health officials were plagued by a lack of reagent and other problems that resulted in a testing backlog, but said those issues are now resolved and that the province needs to ramp up testing immediately. “We’re going to get a move on it,” he said. The premier also announced his administration would will extend hours of construction on critical projects such as hospitals, temporary structures and assessment centres needed to identify and treat patients during the novel coronavirus pandemic. He said the province would ramp up inspections to ensure essential workers on these projects and in other areas are kept safe and said his government was issuing a call to retired inspectors to help with the increased inspections. Ontario reported 550 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday and 21 more deaths, bringing the provincial total to 5.276. The death toll has risen to 174. The province has so far tested 84,601 people for the virus. There are 1,102 cases currently under investigation and awaiting test results. Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister provided an update on Monday in regards to the COVID-19 response across the province. Provincial health officials spoke shortly after the premier with an update on the province’s COVID-19 cases and measures being taken to curb the pandemic. Manitoba’s chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin announced one new case of COVID-19 in the province on Monday, bringing the total number of cases to 204. The total number of COVID-19-related deaths remains at two, he added. Also, Roussin said that in addition to practicing social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, people are encouraged to wear non-medical face masks to protect others from catching the virus through droplet spread, echoing the advice of Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam. He stressed that wearing the mask does not protect the individual wearing it from catching the virus, rather, it could help prevent further spread of the virus. Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister said that as Canadian provinces begin to run out of money and enter further debt situations due to spending to counter the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government should create a “federal emergency reserve.” Pallister said that he and the other premiers have been in talks about this idea and have recently proposed it to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Ontario Premier Doug Ford renewed his call for medical supplies on Saturday, saying that while officials at Health Canada are doing “everything they can” it may be time to “rattle some cages.” Ford responded to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s earlier comments that Canada is set to receive “millions” of medical masks from China, suggesting that Ontario should receive 40 per cent of the shipment because the province makes up 40 per cent of Canada’s population. The premier also took aim at U.S. President Donald Trump for his order asking medical supply company 3M to halt exports of N95 masks to Canada, calling it “unacceptable.” Ontario confirmed 375 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, bringing the provincial total to 3,630. The province also reported 27 new deaths, with the death toll rising to 94. A 12-year-old girl in Volusia County, Florida called 911 after her mother lost consciousness behind the wheel, allegedly from a drug overdose. Inside the vehicle were also a seven-year-old and one-year-old. Authorities found them and saved the woman with Naloxone. The 28-year-old mother told police she took heroin for a long family drive because she had no pain killers and her back was hurting. The woman was taken to the hospital and will face charges.
