Speaking outside his Ottawa residence, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday that businesses facing a rent crunch will need to hold on through the COVID-19 pandemic and help with an eventual economic recovery, instead of closing up and slowing the rebound. He said the government “really hopes” commercial landlords will apply for a federal program launching next week that would give companies a break on the rent, warning that they may find themselves out of cash in the future if they evict tenants now. “With many people discovering that we can work from home … there may be a lot of vacancies in commercial buildings over the coming months and years. Who knows exactly what the post-pandemic world will look like exactly?” Trudeau said. Earlier in the day, the government unveiled details of a bridge financing program for large companies, saying that any receiving loans will have to give the government the option to take an ownership stake, or provide a cash equivalent. Trudeau said the terms are designed to make sure companies using the program receive bridge loans, not bailouts, to get through COVID-19’s economic disruptions. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and the province’s chief medical health officer Dr. Saqib Shahab provided an update on the province’s COVID-19 ongoing response on Thursday. Moe announced an expansion of the testing criteria throughout the province as more businesses start to reopen, saying this will lead to an increase in overall testing numbers as a result. Shahab said the broadened criteria will pay careful attention to those who are caregivers to people with compromised immune systems, the homeless and vulnerable populations. Testing will also focus on patients restarting paused treatments like cancer care and expectant mothers. More businesses in Saskatchewan will be able to reopen on Friday under phase 1 of the province’s reopening plan, including golf courses and driving theatres. Outfitters operating in areas not impacted by current travel restrictions will be also permitted to begin their operations. Next Tuesday will be the beginning of phase 2 of the reopening plan, Moe said, adding that many retail businesses will be able to begin operation, such as shopping malls and select personal services including hair stylists and barbers, massage therapists and other services. Saskatchewan reported five new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, four in the far north and one in Regina. The total number of cases in the province stands at 582 as of Thursday. Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw, along with Premier Jason Kenney, provided an update on the province’s COVID-19 situation. It was announced that the province has ordered all non-essential businesses to close due to the pandemic. The provincial government announced some big changes Friday as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 542 in Alberta. Kenney said the restriction on mass gatherings was being tightened. People can no longer gather in groups of under 50; they must be smaller than 15. That includes indoor and outdoor events, the premier said, like weddings and funerals. He also stressed the two-metre social distancing rule must be observed. The Alberta government announced measures to protect renters worried about being evicted because they’re not able to pay their rent during this unprecedented time.
