Boris Johnson has confirmed that from Monday in England, groups of up to six people will be able to meet outside with others from different households as long as they “observe social distancing rules”. He added: “We will now allow people to meet in gardens and other private spaces.  These changes mean friends and family can start to meet their loved ones, perhaps, seeing both parents or grandparents at once.” Mr Johnson said that for many people, this will be a “long awaited, and joyful moment”.  He added that people should try to avoid seeing people from too many households in quick succession “so that we can avoid the risk of quick transmission from lots of different families”. People should not go inside the homes of their friends and families, staying only in the garden. And those shielding  must continue to do so. “I want to say to those extremely clinically vulnerable people who are shielded that I do understand how difficult this has been for you especially,” Mr Johnson said. Mr Johnson denied that the public will fail to heed the coronavirus advice because of the actions of Dominic Cummings. The Prime Minister told the Downing Street briefing: “No, I don’t think that people will respond differently, I think people will listen very carefully to what the messages are.” For all the latest politics news, head to our live blog: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/05/28/dominic-cummings-news-coronavirus-nhs-test-trace-boris-johnson/?WT.mc_id=tmg_youtube_offsite_televideo-youtubevideo_28MayBoris&utm_source=tmgoff&utm_medium=tmg_youtube&utm_content=offsite_televideo&utm_campaign=tmg_youtube_offsite_televideo-youtubevideo_28MayBoris Get the latest headlines: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/ Telegraph.co.uk and YouTube.com/TelegraphTV are websites of The Telegraph, the UK’s best-selling quality daily newspaper providing news [More]

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance program, designed to reduce rent by 75 per cent for small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Federal and provincial governments will cover 50 per cent, while landlords absorb 25 per cent. Speaking outside his Ottawa residence, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday that businesses facing a rent crunch will need to hold on through the COVID-19 pandemic and help with an eventual economic recovery, instead of closing up and slowing the rebound. He said the government “really hopes” commercial landlords will apply for a federal program launching next week that would give companies a break on the rent, warning that they may find themselves out of cash in the future if they evict tenants now. “With many people discovering that we can work from home … there may be a lot of vacancies in commercial buildings over the coming months and years. Who knows exactly what the post-pandemic world will look like exactly?” Trudeau said. Earlier in the day, the government unveiled details of a bridge financing program for large companies, saying that any receiving loans will have to give the government the option to take an ownership stake, or provide a cash equivalent. Trudeau said the terms are designed to make sure companies using the program receive bridge loans, not bailouts, to get through COVID-19’s economic disruptions. Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw and Premier Jason Kenney provided an update on Wednesday on the province’s ongoing efforts to combat COVID-19. Kenney announced that the province would be entering Phase 1 of their relaunch strategy starting Thursday. In all areas of the province, with the exception of Calgary and Brooks, retail businesses, hairstyling and barber shops, museums and art galleries, dental procedures, day camps and day cares will be allowed to reopen as of May 14 with limits on occupancies. Places of worship and funeral services would also be able to reopen under “strict guidelines.” Restaurants would be required to have seating at 50 per cent capacity. Calgary and Brooks, which Kenney said account for three-quarters of the province’s cases and hospitalizations, will see a more phased approach. On Thursday, retail businesses, museums and daycares will be able to reopen with limits on occupancies. On May 25, these regions will see hairstylists and barbershops reopen, as well as restaurants, cafes and bars with the same 50 per cent capacity as other parts of the province. Then on June 1, places for worship and funeral services will be able to have additional flexibility under COVID-19 measures. Hinshaw reported that as of Wednesday, there were 62 new cases. There were 5,076 recoveries, with 1,211 active cases. The province also declared a new outbreak during Wednesday’s briefing, with five people testing positive at the Horizon work camp, operated by Canadian Natural Resources. The prime minister has outlined measures to start a gradual easing of the lockdown in England, while warning of the danger of a second surge of the pandemic. In a television address Boris Johnson said it was the right time to “update” the government’s message in England, from “stay at home” to “stay alert”. But Labour warned that the new message lacked clarity. And the “stay at home” message is not being changed in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The Prime Minister’s plan urges anyone who can’t work from home to return to work, but to avoid using public transport if possible. People will be told they can exercise as much as they want but playing sports can only be done with members of the same household. From June schools in England could see a partial reopening starting at primary level. There are no plans for a full return of secondary schools before September. From July at the earliest, parts of the hospitality industry and other public places might be re-opened. There may be some kind of quarantine for all air travellers arriving in the UK although there is no detail yet. Boris Johnson has set out his “conditional plan” to ease the coronavirus lockdown, lifting restrictions on exercise and work. In a pre-recorded address to the nation, the Prime Minister said the government wants to “encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise” – provided they stick to social distancing guidelines and stay two metres apart. And in a bid to kickstart the economy, Mr Johnson said anyone who cannot work from home – such as those in construction and manufacturing – should be “actively encouraged” to go to work from Monday. Ford said that a novel coronavirus vaccine is required to “go back to normal,” and that they will be funding “the most advanced medical research” in Ontario. “The world needs a vaccine, and there is no reason why that vaccine can’t be found right here in Ontario,” Ford said. The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ontario surpassed 10,000, as 485 additional cases were reported Saturday morning. Thirty-six new deaths were reported, bringing the death toll in the province to 514.
