We are absolutely clear that if this situation is not resolved quickly, there will be serious consequences. He added Iran was the “biggest loser” if freedom of navigation was restricted, and said, “We’re not looking at military options; we’re looking at a diplomatic way to resolve the situation.” Iran announced it had seized the British-flagged Stena Impero tanker on Friday but denies reports that it seized the British-managed Mesdar, saying the ship was “shortly stopped” by Iranian authorities. The UK seized an Iranian tanker near Gibraltar on July 4, which was suspected of being on its way to sell oil to Syria in breach of international sanctions, to which Tehran announced it would respond in kind. Tensions between the United States and Iran have been escalating since Iran announced in May that it would partially withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear deal which the Obama administration, Iran, the European Union, and the P4+1 signed in 2015 – the Trump administration withdrew from the deal in May 2018, re-imposing sanctions on Iran. Iran threatens to seize British oil tanker after Marines storm ship off Gibraltar coast IRAN has threatened to seize a British oil tanker if the Iranian tanker detained in Gibraltar is not immediately released. British Royal Marines seized the supertanker Grace 1 on Thursday, accusing it of trying to take oil to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions. But this dramatic step has infuriated Iran, threatening to escalate confrontations with the West. Mohsen Rezai, a senior commander in Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards said in a tweet: “If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the (Iranian) authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker.” He added: “Islamic Iran in its 40-year history has never initiated hostilities in any battles but has also never hesitated in responding to bullies.” Tehran had summoned the British ambassador to voice “its very strong objection to the illegal and unacceptable seizure” of its ship. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the Iranian oil tanker was carrying crude oil from Iran, according to the state news agency IRNA. Gibraltar said it had reasonable grounds to believe the Grace 1 was carrying crude oil to the Baniyas refinery in Syria. Californians report a sizable Fourth of July earthquake The USGS reports a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 for the earthquake centered near Ridgecrest, California. Some people in parts of California and Nevada say it’s the strongest they’ve felt in some time. The strongest earthquake to hit Southern California in nearly 20 years left scattered damage Thursday morning and was felt from Las Vegas to Orange County, the US Geological Survey reported. The quake, with a magnitude of 6.4, was centered near Ridgecrest, a community west of the Mojave Desert and about 150 miles north of Los Angeles. At least 159 aftershocks of magnitude 2.5 or greater were recorded after the earthquake, according to USGS Seismologist Robert Graves. The largest of them were magnitude 4.6. Lucy Jones of the USGS called it a “robust” series and said there is a 50% chance of another large quake in the next week. As Ridgecrest Mayor Peggy Breeden spoke to CNN on Thursday afternoon, an aftershock interrupted the interview.
