In the second installment of Synapse’s Third Thursday webinar series, we explored nuclear power economics. Synapse staff members have been analyzing Indian Point nuclear power plant issues since the early 1980s. In 2017, New York officially announced the impending closure of Indian Point. Principal Associate Bob Fagan and Associate Spencer Fields, authors of our report (for Riverkeeper and Natural Resources Defense Council) on replacement energy and capacity resources associated with Indian Point’s retirement, discussed the use of ReEDS modeling in their most recent analysis. They discussed challenges such as accounting for energy efficiency, New York state policies, and other endogenous inputs. Moderator Bruce Biewald (CEO/Founder) provided historical context based on Synapse’s long history with Indian Point. Principal Associate Max Chang joined the conversation to illuminate how nuclear power economics have changed in the last decade.
