It’s safe to say actor and singer Jennifer Lopez had an incredible 2019. From getting engaged to baseball great Alex Rodriguez to receiving a Golden Globe nomination for her supporting role in Hustlers, Jenny from the Block knows how to go big. But Lopez’s luck seemingly ran out when she showed up to the 77th Golden Globe Awards on January 5th, 2020 wearing a gown that made waves for all the wrong reasons. That’s a shame, considering the Bronx native usually knocks it out of the park. Remember her iconic Versace dress from the 2000 MTV Awards? Heck, Lopez even won a Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA Fashion Awards in June 2019.
Alas, the starlet is topping many a worst-dressed list with this Golden Globes gown. So what went wrong with Jennifer Lopez’s red carpet look? We’ll break down all the details about this interesting outfit.
Lopez strutted down the Golden Globes red carpet wearing a bright green, gold, and white gown designed by Maison Valentino. Although the dress’ colors are delightfully eye-catching and festive, we are admittedly confused by the massive bow affixed to the front of the dress. The bow is so distracting, it arguably eclipses Lopez’s stunning emerald and diamond accessories from Harry Winston, and that’s saying a lot because she was wearing 145 carats worth of bling!
We’re not sure what the star was going for here. One clever Twitter critic aptly compared her designer gown to actor Ryan Reynolds’ infamous and oh-so-meme-able ugly Christmas sweater. Maybe she’s not quite ready for the holidays to end, but could you blame her?
To her credit, Lopez did nail a gorgeous up-do of braids, and those smoky eyes? The “Dinero” singer’s makeup artist clearly knows her way around an eyeshadow palette. Lopez’s look might have missed the mark with the masses, but there’s no denying she’s an industry boss eight days a week.
Unfortunately for Jennifer Lopez, her gown was largely torn to shreds on social media, with one person writing:
“Jennifer Lopez looks like a Christmas present got super drunk and threw up on her.”
Another person quipped:
“Jennifer Lopez looks like a Christmas bauble and her forehead is over contoured. Return to sender.”
But not everyone hated this piece of high fashion. One Twitter user gave this lukewarm review:
“Leave it to Jennifer Lopez to make a gown seemingly adorned with leftover Christmas gift wrap look elegant.”
E! News praised the ensemble with the gushing headline, quote: “Jennifer Lopez Reigns Supreme at the 2020 Golden Globes With Her Princess Ballgown.”
Love it or hate it, we’ve got a feeling Lopez will be just fine. She’s all about taking risks on the red carpet. After all, she told Extra:
“I’ve always loved fashion since I was very young. I was always cutting up a dress or a skirt, putting a shirt around a scarf and doing crazy things.”
Even though Jennifer Lopez didn’t win the red carpet and she didn’t win her category at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards, we’re willing to bet that the multihyphenate has pretty healthy self-esteem and can probably take her show biz lumps. Plus, it also can’t hurt to have fiance Alex Rodriguez in your bullpen. In the wake of her loss, A-Rod posted a tender pep talk on Instagram to cheer up his lady and shift the conversation away from her controversial gown.
He wrote:
“Jen, it doesn’t take a trophy, medal, or plaque to identify a true champion. To millions of young women who have watched you and have been inspired and empowered to do amazing things in their lives, you are a champion. For countless musicians, dancers, actresses, and performers who have seen and emulate your passion, drive and work ethic to find their own success, you are a champion. To your children, your family, your coaches, your staff, and your extended family, you are a champion. To everyone whose lives you enrich daily, you are a champion. And don’t you ever forget it.”
Wow. The award for sweetest post-Globes moment goes to J-Rod. Let’s all pause for a moment to give these two a standing ovation.
