The scenes inside overcrowded ICU wards in northern Italy in March were both shocking and signficant - the first vision that the full impact of coronavirus was being unleashed in Europe.

The worst affected place was Bergamo. It was overwhelmed first by the virus, then by death, then grief.

Now the worst is over, there is a sense, among bereft families, of anger - that Italy's lockdown didn't start soon enough.
