Health minister Matt Hancock and professor Yvonne Doyle provided an update Sunday on the ongoing response to COVID-19, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson was discharged from a London hospital after being admitted for persistent COVID-19 symptoms.
Before beginning the update, Hancock said it was “great news” that Johnson was discharged, adding that Johnson’s thoughts are with those affected, and that he is thankful for both those who supported his recovery and the National Health Service (NHS) staff who cared for him.
Johnson was admitted to hospital over one week ago and was transferred to intensive care for oxygen treatment, but did not need a ventilator during his stay.
Hancock also announced that the country had surpassed 10,000 deaths caused by the virus, calling it a “somber day.” He stated that more than 84,000 people have tested positive and over 19,900 are in hospital, but reminded the nation to continue “steadfast commitment” to follow self-isolation rules during the pandemic.
