U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.S. coronavirus task force provided an update on the COVID-19 crisis on Friday.
Trump said that “tremendous progress is being made” and that there are signs the COVID-19 curve in the country is beginning to level due to “aggressive” strategies including physical distancing. Trump added that he thinks the death toll will be “substantially” less than 100,000, which was initially predicted as a potential outcome of the pandemic in the U.S.
He also said that the medical supply for health care workers fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in the country is “in great shape,” and that the Department of Defense will also be sending 10 million N95 masks. Over 2 million virus tests have been completed and approximately 100,000 more are being conducted every day, stated Trump.
When asked about reopening the country amid the pandemic, Trump told reporters that “staying at home leads to death also,” and said that deciding to reopen the U.S. would be “the biggest decision I’ll ever make.”
The number of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. has passed 470,000, with over 16,000 deaths in the country as of Friday.
