Ontario Premier Doug Ford was joined by Health Minister Christine Elliott, Ross Romano, minister of colleges and universities, and Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, minister of long-term care on Saturday to announce that the province would be investing $20 million towards “Ontario-based research into COVID-19” to help find a vaccine for the virus.
Ford said that a novel coronavirus vaccine is required to “go back to normal,” and that they will be funding “the most advanced medical research” in Ontario.
“The world needs a vaccine, and there is no reason why that vaccine can’t be found right here in Ontario,” Ford said.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ontario surpassed 10,000, as 485 additional cases were reported Saturday morning. Thirty-six new deaths were reported, bringing the death toll in the province to 514.
