New York governor Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday that New York state has seen its highest single-day increase in deaths due to COVID-19 on Tuesday with 779 deaths recorded.
Governor Cuomo said that the number of deaths is expected to “continue to rise as current hospitalized patients pass away due to COVID-19.”
Cuomo also said that the state has lost more people to COVID-19 than it lost during the 9/11 World Trade Centre attacks.
New York has a death toll of 6,268 due to the novel coronavirus while 9/11 caused 2,753 deaths among New Yorkers.
On the other hand, Cuomo said that the social distancing measures have worked and that the COVID-19 curve in the state have started to flatten.
Governor Cuomo added that he has directed Dr. Havidan Rodrigue, president of State University at New York (SUNY) Albany to do more COVID-19 testing among the African-American and Latino communities.
Cuomo said that the state will give an additional $600 dollar to all unemployed New Yorkers and that the government is extending the period covered by unemployment benefits for an additional 13 weeks.
Cuomo added that civic duty to vote shouldn’t be opposed to public health and that all New Yorkers will be able to vote absentee on June 23rd primaries.
