New Brunswick health officials provided an update on Friday regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in the province as well as an announcement on relaxing measures in combating the outbreak.

Over the next several weeks and months, New Brunswick will be gradually lifting COVID-19 restrictions, while complying with public health policies and advice, announced Premier Blaine Higgs. The four-step plan to ease measures will only progress if conditions under each level are met. The province's chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell said that if another spike of cases occurs, she won't hesitate to reinstate restrictions again.

Additionally, the province will enter the "orange phase," which is the first of four phases for loosening strict COVID-19 measures within the province. Effective immediately, households may choose to spend time with only one other household, said Higgs, as part of this initial phase of reopening the province.

Border controls will also be maintained until a vaccine is developed.

During the briefing, Russell said that like the day prior, the province had no new cases of COVID-19 to announce, and she encouraged people to continue to wash their hands, not touch their face and to practice social distancing.
