B.C. Premier John Horgan announced Wednesday the renewal of a provincial state of emergency as the province continues its efforts to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Horgan said the state of emergency would remain in place “for the foreseeable future.”
The B.C. government also announced it would use a funding windfall of $120 million from the federal government to “decommission, reclaim or restore” more than 2,000 inactive or orphaned wells within British Columbia.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an investment of $1.7 billion to clean up orphan wells in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan in April to help keep people working during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Energy Minister Bruce Ralston said $100 million would be used to clean up dormant wells in B.C., while $15 million would go towards cleaning up orphaned wells, where the operator “no longer exists,” cannot be located or is insolvent.
The remaining $5 million will be used to mitigate the environmental impacts of “legacy” oil and gas discovery.
