In 2019, scientists published the first picture of a black hole! The picture is incredible, but do you know how big it is? How big is a black hole with the same mass as the earth, or the sun? How about other common black holes? If you’re like me, you honestly had no idea, and this video is for you.
Black holes are amazing mathematical concepts, and the subject of many exotic physics hypotheses, but they’re also REAL, physical, things floating around out there in the universe! One of the things I love about #sciencecommunication, is when you can do something that has never been done before, and I think this is one of those times. In this video, I calculated the #SchwarzschildRadius of a bunch of black holes, and placed them in real places around the planet; some of these are so small you could hold them in your hand! That said, I’m neither a physicist of a #blackhole expert. As such, the math is approximate based on generally accepted averages of mass of selected objects. The animated sizes are estimates based on the locations. I’m not an animator or #VFX expert, but I definitely know my way around Final Cut Pro (even more so now). I hope you love the video! Please shoot me a comment and share the video with your space-loving friends!

😘 SPECIAL THANKS TO…
All my friends who I made watch clips of various (badly) animated #blackhole event horizons. Thanks to video editor heroes Woody Donahue and Alex Esteves who were both very patient with my questions as I pieced this together. And very special thanks to Wren from Corridor Crew who’s video about star sizes (in part) inspired this video, and who also was encouraging as I figured this out.
🐣 EASTER EGGS
P.S — Black holes are actually infinitesimally small points, so this whole exercise is actually kind of silly, but I really enjoyed it!
P.P.S — I made them purple because purple always invoked both mystery and importance to me. Plus it’s my fiancee’s favorite color so I hoped she’d be interested enough to let me show her all the iterations. Love you, Flav!
I just wanted to say one last thank you to YOU, lovely reader. Thank you for supporting me on this scicomm journey! 💖 I literally could not do this without you. – #tracedominguez
