What’s up people! Got a couple new reviews for you for this week! And unfortunately, they are from two people who’s celebrity has long since overshadowed any residual quality they’re capable of with their films, as we have the newest films from David Ayer & Seth Rogen here, The Tax Collector & An American Pickle!
The Tax Collector is David Ayer’s latest original tale about a Southern Los Angeles Mexican Crime story. Following Bobby Soto & Shia LaBeauf as tax collectors for their local cartel, they find their whole world turned upside down when a new rival encroaches on their territory. Anyone familiar with David Ayer should know that he’s pretty much been using this setting as the backdrop of all his films since Training Day. He actually had a chance to branch out a little in 2014, but after Suicide Squad, he just went back to the setting that he’s the most familiar with, and much to the detriment of his films, because this is just as unoriginal, just as generic and shows a serious lack of growth. The story is unoriginal, the characters thin and one-note, and the worst part is that it attempts to use violence and shock value to make up for it.
An American Pickle is the first HBO Max original film from Seth Rogen’s production company Point Grey. Directed by Brandon Trost & written by Simon Rich of “Man Seeking Woman” fame, the movie sees Seth Rogen pulling double duty as Hershel Greenbaum, a Russian immigrant who emigrates to the US in 1919 with his wife, falls into a vat of pickle juice and is perfectly preserved there for 100 years. He is woken up to a changed world, in which he discovers he has a great grandson, also played by Rogen, and the film proceeds to tackle his readjustment to the modern world through…cancel culture. And the film is just as oversimplified and just as unfunny as it sounds. Rogen is still capable of making a funny comedy, but this just isn’t it. And the worst part is that if this is the first HBO Max original film, that does not spell out a whole lot of confidence for the future of the app.
